Considering that Denise Tinline was watching Guy Fieri on the Food Network when The Sun knocked on her door, it’s fitting that the kitchen was one of the reasons she opted for a Zen townhome.

“It’s THE reason,” added her husband Ben a few minutes later, as Denise enumerated the many selling points of the townhome they recently moved into.

According to developer Zenterra, in fact, the townhomes have “the largest kitchen in a multi-family development in Metro Vancouver.” For empty nesters who like to entertain, like the Tinlines, the new townhome seems made to order.

Each of the four-bedroom West Coast Craftsman-style units has a 16-by-16-foot kitchen. Features include a five-burner gas cooktop — very important to foodies like the Denise and Ben — a double wall oven and a four-by-four-foot island (with an optional wine cooler).

“We looked at other new complexes, but they were a lot more narrow,” Denise said. “This is twenty feet wide. You could see that with the kitchen, the expanse going across, it wasn’t at all like what we’d see previously. I’d look at these newer developments and say, ‘Where am I going to put all my stuff? I have a lot of kitchen apparatus.’”

The Tinlines fit into a niche that Zenterra Development and marketing rep Derek Fenton says weren’t being met in the townhome market: Baby boomers downsizing from a regular home who still want the space and don’t want to worry about maintaining the grounds.

“They’ve worked hard for 30 years and just want to relax,” Fenton said. “We wanted to provide quality for purchasers who wanted the amenities of a home and the square footage.”

The Tinlines fit this profile to a certain extent. Though not retired — Ben still works, and Denise plans on returning to the workforce in the new year — and not quite of the boomer generation, they are empty nesters. Their three twenty-something daughters have flown the coop, in their case the family’s 4,500-square-foot home in Maple Ridge. And the Tinlines did want to downsize, but not to a starter-home size.

The price, Fenton noted, starts just below the price for a single-family detached home in the area.

Each of the Zen townhomes is a four-bedroom units with over 1,900-square-feet of living space. The units include a sizable (eight-by-20-foot) deck, with a natural gas hookup for the avid barbecuer, and a spacious, 20-by-20-foot tandem garage.

“And then the finishings are really nice,” Denise noted.

Inside a Zen townhome, Zenterra and its designer Robert Ciccozzi Architecture Inc. have added a number of luxury touches.

On the upper floor, the 13-by-14-foot master bedrooms have rope lighting mounted about the suspended crown moulding, adding a warm glow against the perimeter of the ceiling. The warm glow of this feature is matched in the bathroom by under-sink lighting.

The ensuite comes with double sinks set in a quartz countertop, a towel warmer, custom vanity and double-sided shower. The master bedroom also features a chandelier and six-by-eight-foot walk-in closet.

On the main floor, a gas fireplace set in Italian stone defines the entertainment system, another selling point for the Tinlines, Denise said.

The lower floor features a fourth bedroom, or flex room, which the Tinlines have converted for use as a home gym.

The active couple likes to travel, and another Zen feature they appreciate is not having to worry about upkeep on the property.

“Being able to just shut it up and not worry about it, and just go, is great,” Denise said. “We’re close to the border if we want to fly out of Bellingham or just go across the line.” Many of the second-phase units, due for completion at the end of January 2014, will have views of Mount Baker.

Tinline said she also loves the fact that “there’s so much shopping here.” The Surrey development is a five-minute drive from Costco and Willowbrook Shopping Centre.

The Tinlines are looking forward to sharing their new space with their daughters.

“They love the kitchen,” Denise said. “We spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I love to cook. And my daughters love to cook and eat. It will be a great gathering place for us.”
